Understanding Ripe Plantain prices in Delta State
Why Ripe Plantain prices vary so much
Ripe Plantain costs 33% more at Effurun Market (₦4,000) than at Ogbogonogo Market (₦3,000) — a difference of ₦1,000 per 5 6 pieces for the same item.
Most of that gap is transport and distance from where the item is produced or landed. Market size matters too: high-turnover markets buy in larger volumes and sell on thinner margins, while smaller neighbourhood markets carry the cost of a shorter supply chain. Whether a market is primarily wholesale or retail can account for much of the rest.
Is Ripe Plantain getting more expensive?
Over the last 90 days the median price has fallen from ₦4,000 to ₦3,500 per 5 6 pieces — a change of 12.5%. Prices easing usually reflects harvest supply reaching the markets, and that window does not always last.
Which unit is Ripe Plantain sold in?
Markets report Ripe Plantain in 5 6 pieces, bunch (16 25 pieces). We never average across units — a price per 5 6 pieces and a price per bunch (16 25 pieces) are different figures, and treating them as one number produces something meaningless. Compare like with like, and check the unit before assuming one market is cheaper than another.
All figures are medians of prices recorded in Nigerian markets, published in Naira.
