Understanding Crayfish prices in Lagos State
Why Crayfish prices vary so much
Crayfish costs 67% more at Century Market (₦15,000) than at Mile 12 Market (₦9,000) — a difference of ₦6,000 per painter for the same item.
Most of that gap is transport and distance from where the item is produced or landed. Market size matters too: high-turnover markets buy in larger volumes and sell on thinner margins, while smaller neighbourhood markets carry the cost of a shorter supply chain. Whether a market is primarily wholesale or retail can account for much of the rest.
Is Crayfish getting more expensive?
Over the last 90 days the median price has fallen from ₦14,000 to ₦12,000 per painter — a change of 14.3%. Prices easing usually reflects harvest supply reaching the markets, and that window does not always last.
Which unit is Crayfish sold in?
Markets report Crayfish in painter, bag, derica. We never average across units — a price per painter and a price per bag are different figures, and treating them as one number produces something meaningless. Compare like with like, and check the unit before assuming one market is cheaper than another.
All figures are medians of prices recorded in Nigerian markets, published in Naira.
