Understanding Unripe Plantain prices in Lagos State
Why Unripe Plantain prices vary so much
Unripe Plantain costs 400% more at Ajah Market (₦5,000) than at Mile 12 Market (₦1,000) — a difference of ₦4,000 per 5 6 pieces for the same item.
Most of that gap is transport and distance from where the item is produced or landed. Market size matters too: high-turnover markets buy in larger volumes and sell on thinner margins, while smaller neighbourhood markets carry the cost of a shorter supply chain. Whether a market is primarily wholesale or retail can account for much of the rest.
Which unit is Unripe Plantain sold in?
Markets report Unripe Plantain in 5 6 pieces, bunch (16 25 pieces). We never average across units — a price per 5 6 pieces and a price per bunch (16 25 pieces) are different figures, and treating them as one number produces something meaningless. Compare like with like, and check the unit before assuming one market is cheaper than another.
All figures are medians of prices recorded in Nigerian markets, published in Naira.
